The Mistake I See Most Often With Puppies
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make with puppies is expecting too much, too soon.
Puppies are still learning everything. They are learning where to go to the bathroom, what they are allowed to chew, how to behave in the house, and how to understand us. It is a lot for them to take in all at once.
When we expect them to behave like fully trained adult dogs, it often leads to frustration on both sides. The puppy gets confused, and the owner feels like things are not working.
Through raising my own puppies, I have learned that patience and consistency matter more than anything. Puppies do not need perfection. They need clear guidance and time to learn.
Another part of this mistake is inconsistency.
For example, if a puppy is allowed to jump up sometimes but corrected other times, they do not understand what is expected. If one day they are allowed on the couch and the next day they are not, it creates confusion. Puppies learn best when the rules are simple and consistent.
I have also learned that puppies get overtired very easily, and this is something many people do not realize. An overtired puppy often looks like a “naughty” puppy. They might bite more, stop listening, or become extra wild. In reality, they usually just need rest.
With my own puppies, I focus on:
-Keeping expectations age appropriate
-Staying consistent with rules and routines
-Giving lots of rest and quiet time
-Guiding instead of reacting out of frustration
When you shift your mindset from expecting a puppy to behave perfectly, to teaching them step by step, everything changes. Progress becomes more realistic, and the experience becomes much more enjoyable.
Puppies are not trying to be difficult. They are trying to learn.
In the next post, I will share how I help prepare puppies for their future homes and set them up for success from the very beginning.
