Choosing the Right Kennel for Your Dog

One of the questions I’m often asked as a breeder is how to choose a kennel when traveling. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, but there are some important things to look for — especially if you have an intact dog or a dog that thrives on routine.

I personally prefer a traditional kennel setup. Structure, consistency, and calm environments are important for most dogs. Large group play or daycare-style boarding can be overwhelming and isn’t always the best fit, particularly for intact dogs who can pick up unwanted behaviors if not closely supervised.

Before choosing a kennel, it’s worth doing some research. Read reviews, ask friends or other dog owners where they board, and look for patterns in feedback. A solid reputation and experienced staff matter far more than flashy marketing.

A good kennel should also be willing to follow individual instructions. Whether that means feeding separately, limiting interaction with other dogs, or maintaining a specific routine, your requests should be respected — not dismissed.

Communication is another key factor. You should expect a call or message if something seems off, even if it’s minor. In my own experience, having staff who are confident, knowledgeable, and calm when an issue comes up makes all the difference.

Finally, trust your instincts. The right kennel should feel organized, clean, and calm — and the dogs there should look comfortable. When those pieces are in place, you can travel knowing your dog is in capable hands.

Choosing the right kennel is about more than convenience. It’s about finding a place that understands dogs and takes their care seriously.
